Die Spaßgeneration“or “When I was your age…“
It is sometimes hard to overcome generation gaps between groups of people who are somehow forced to live together.
Such cases usually happen when the young generation has to interact, willingly or not, with the older generation, such as parents, grandparents and optionally great-grandparents. These interactions may result into serious misunderstandings, which are pretty annoying.
Alas, it is almost impossible to avoid them. There are several reasons. Firstly, you cannot choose your family. Secondly, you cannot run away. Thirdly, you cannot force anybody, especially an adult whose rank in the gang is certainly higher than yours, to shut up. Therefore, you are stuck in a never-ending whirl of discussions about the rottenness of contemporary teenagers.
However, the adults cannot really expect us to behave the way they used to. The society is changing because the world is changing. It would be weird if we still had to stand in a mile-long queue only to get a pack of rotten oranges. Were they not clinking with their keys during the Velvet Revolution because they wanted change? Then why on earth do they feel so angry when we are using the benefits they were once fighting for?
True, they used to rebel against war, nuclear bombs, racism and the iron curtain, which prevented them from traveling. Compared to our parents, we are often rebelling only for the pure pleasure of rebellion.
But, whatever our reasons are, there is still no ground for fear. Dear parents and grandparents, we will graduate. We will get the diploma and finish university. We will have families and the human civilization will last a few more decades. =)
